Calf strain in runners

A calf strain can stop a training block dead. I treat calf strains with hands-on remedial soft tissue therapy in Paddington, Brisbane, and work out why the calf gave way in the first place.

What a calf strain is

Muscle fibres in the calf overloaded past what they could handle, sometimes in a sudden moment, sometimes as a gradual build. It shows up as a sharp grab or a persistent tight ache.

Why it happened

Fatigue, a spike in load, the achilles and foot below it, and old scar tissue from a previous strain all play a part. I treat the calf and address why, so it does not just recur.

How the treatment works

Assessment

I take your history, watch how you move, and use orthopaedic testing to rule things in or out. Black and white: positive or negative.

Treatment

Hands-on soft tissue work, with real time on the table. I treat the whole area involved, not just the point of pain.

Education

You leave understanding your own body. A few sessions in, you can tell me what is happening and why. That is what keeps it from coming back.

Common questions

How soon can I run again?

It depends on the grade of the strain. I will assess it and give you a realistic timeline, and we build load back rather than guessing.

Is this a sports massage?

No. This is clinical treatment for a specific problem, not a general relaxation rub down.
